National Unity Day is celebrated in India on 31st October. It was introduced by the Government of India in 2014. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who played a major role in the political integration of India.
October 31st is observed as 'National Unity Day' to pay tribute to veteran freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was also the country's first Home Minister, whose contribution to many institutions joining the Union of India after independence is particularly noteworthy.
As the country is grateful for Patel's significant contribution to the unity of India, the day is celebrated as a tribute to 'national unity'. The government announced in 2014 that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary on 31st October would be celebrated as 'National Unity Day'.
Vallabhbhai Patel was referred to as 'Sardar'. His leadership skills in the struggle for freedom and beyond and especially during the consolidation of states and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.Sardar Patel achieved the incredible feat of persuading almost every one of the 565 self-governing states to join the Union of India.
For his commitment to integration, Sardar Patel received the title 'Iron Man of India'.
National Unity Day Pledge
The pledge is read out in government offices on the occasion of National Unity Day.
“I swear that I will dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the country and I strive to convey this message to my countrymen. I take this oath in the spirit of the unification of my country made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also resolve to contribute my own to ensure the internal security of my country.”
According to the official order, all government offices, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and other public institutions are required to conduct pledge ceremonies on October 31 to celebrate 'National Unity Day'.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development has also issued instructions to allow students in schools and colleges to take the National Unity Day Pledge, so as to motivate them to strive for the unity and integrity of the country.

“मी
शपथ घेतो की मी देशाची एकता, अखंडता आणि सुरक्षितता जपण्यासाठी स्वतःला
समर्पित करीन आणि हा संदेश माझ्या देशबांधवा मध्ये पोहोचवण्यासाठी मी
प्रयत्नशील आहे. सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल यांच्या दूरदृष्टी आणि कृतीमुळे शक्य
झालेल्या माझ्या देशाच्या एकीकरणाच्या भावनेने मी ही शपथ घेत आहे. मी
माझ्या देशाची अंतर्गत सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करण्यासाठी माझे स्वतःचे योगदान
देण्याचाही संकल्प करतो.”
अधिकृत आदेशानुसार, सर्व
सरकारी कार्यालये, सार्वजनिक क्षेत्रातील उपक्रम (पीएसयू) आणि इतर
सार्वजनिक संस्थांनी ३१ ऑक्टोबर रोजी 'राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस' साजरा
करण्यासाठी प्रतिज्ञा समारंभ आयोजित करणे आवश्यक आहे.

संसाधन विकास मंत्रालयाने शाळा आणि महाविद्यालयातील विद्यार्थ्यांना
राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवसाची प्रतिज्ञा घेण्यास परवानगी देण्याच्या सूचनाही जारी
केल्या आहेत, जेणेकरून त्यांना देशाची एकता आणि अखंडता राखण्यासाठी
प्रयत्न करण्यास प्रवृत्त केले जावे.
